FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Ottawa, ON – Rosemarie Falk, Conservative Shadow Minister for Seniors, released the following statement in response to the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) program delays affecting Canadian seniors:

“The Trudeau government needs to provide direction on the Guaranteed Income Supplement program immediately. It is unacceptable that GIS applications have been left in limbo for seniors who were eligible and collected the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB).

“Seniors are being told that their applications are on hold as Service Canada awaits direction on whether CERB can be optioned out for GIS calculation purposes. There has been no decision, and even more troubling, there is no indication on when a decision is even forthcoming.

“Seniors are facing financial uncertainty because of this lack of direction. Too many seniors will find themselves in serious financial hardship, and some stand to lose other benefits tied to the program.

“The Liberal government has claimed expediency throughout this pandemic, but when it comes to Canada’s seniors, their response has been anything but efficient and timely. More delays. More financial uncertainty for seniors. More of the same. There’s only one choice to secure the future – Canada’s Conservatives.”
